Google boosted its hiring of Black and Latinx employees this fiscal year, but saw spiking attrition among Black and Native American women and Latino men.
These two groups left Google at higher rates than any other, with attrition rates of 146 and 148 on an index that uses 100 as a baseline. Black women make up less than 2% of Google's population, whereas Native American women make up just 0.3%. Latino men also saw a high attrition rate of 117, up from 98 in 2020.
The tech giant released this data Thursday in its 2021 Diversity Annual Report.
"Tailoring our retention efforts is necessary to address the root causes of higher attrition among Black, Native American and Latinx Googlers," according to the report.
White employees, Black men, Latinas and Native American men were all more likely to stay at Google in 2021 than in 2020. Asian employees were more likely to leave, with an attrition rate of 85, up from 80.
At the same time, Google made some progress on hiring more Black and Latinx employees in 2021. In 2020, only 5.5% of hires were Black and 6.6% were Latinx, but both percentages spiked to 8.8% in 2021.
These gains came at the expense of Asian candidates, who made up 48.5% of Google's hires in 2020 and 42.8% this year. Almost 45% of Google's 2021 hires were white, up from 43.1% last year.
