Following its acquisition by Apollo Global, Yahoo has named veteran media executive Jim Lanzone as its new CEO. Lanzone is joining Yahoo from Tinder, where he served as chief executive for a little over a year. Prior to that, Lanzone was the chief digital officer of CBS as well as the president and CEO of CBS Interactive.
Lanzone is succeeding Guru Gowrappan, who led the Yahoo and Verizon Media brands until Verizon sold those businesses to Apollo. Tinder's chief executive role is being filled by Renate Nyborg, the dating service's EMEA general manager.
At Yahoo, Lanzone is reportedly looking to grow existing money makers like Yahoo Sports and Yahoo Finance; these plans could include spinning out those units into standalone companies, according to The Wall Street Journal. With such a move, Lanzone would follow the playbook of Tinder parent IAC, which took its video service Vimeo public earlier this year.
