Managing Editor, Newsroom

The Role:

Protocol is hiring a Managing Editor to oversee our newsroom and shape our most important journalism.

Our ideal candidate will be a bold and incisive editor of stories, bursting with fresh new ideas about ways to cover the technology sector. You’ll be an inspiring leader of a growing 30-person newsroom, able to energize the team and define the tone and direction of our coverage. This role reports directly to the Executive Editor and will work closely with the Deputy Managing Editor, who oversees the day-to-day logistics of the newsroom.

We’re looking for someone with at least a decade of editing experience in business or technology journalism. You’ll have an innate mastery of narrative and nut grafs and a keen instinct for what makes a story unmissable. You’ll never be happier than when you’re working with reporters and editors on story ideas or rolling up your sleeves to do an intensive top edit. And you’ll be endlessly fascinated by the tech industry and its power, with a deep-seated desire to tell compelling stories about the people and companies within it.

The managing editor will:

  • Set the tone and direction of our coverage
  • Work closely with editors to refine our coverage and audience focus
  • Work with editors and reporters to improve our most ambitious stories
  • Top edit features and lead stories, and workshop stories with editors and reporters
  • Work closely with the deputy managing editor to keep the newsroom running smoothly

Our ideal candidate has:

  • At least a decade of editing experience in business or technology journalism
  • Experience managing a large team
  • Incredible story sense
  • Demonstrable track record of editing high-impact news and features
Location: We prefer candidates in the San Francisco, New York or Washington, D.C., areas.

Salary: $175,000 to $225,000.
