Colonial Pipeline paid nearly $5 million in untraceable cryptocurrency to Eastern European hackers, according to a report in Bloomberg, in order to resolve a bruising ransomware attack that forced the company to shut down many of its systems for several days.
The FBI has linked the attack, which sent fuel prices soaring, to the group DarkSide.
Colonial Pipeline said in a statement Thursday that it had made "substantial progress in safely restarting our pipeline system."
